Forbidden Street

The 1949 Brit drama THE FORBIDDEN STREET is an enjoyable film set in the Victorian era and starring Maureen O'Hara, Dana Andrews and Sybil Thorndike.

I think it was originally called BRITANNIA MEWS (after the slum area highlighted in the film) and released in the US as THE AFFAIRS OF ADELAIDE.

O'Hara is Adelaide, a young lady of good family who renounces both name and fame when she marries a dirt-poor artist (Dana Andrews) who had been giving Adelaide and her sister art lessons. While O'Hara tries hard at her new lot in life (moving into Britannia Mews with Andrews), washing floors, etc.  He turns out to be full of excuses and alcohol.

When her husband falls over a railing in one of his drunken stupors, Adelaide is blackmailed by a spiteful old hag (Dame Sybil Thorndike) who claims that the girl killed her spouse. Enter a young barrister who is the living image of Adelaide's late husband (also played by Andrews). Will this turn out any better for Adelaide?

O'Hara is excellent in the lead role but there's nothing special about the film either.
