The 1952 Action/Biography/Drama ABOVE AND BEYOND is the story of the WWII pilot, Col. Paul Tibbets, who dropped the Atomic Bomb on Hiroshima. It stars Robert Taylor, Eleanor Parker, James Whitmore, and Larry Keating.
Besides the obvious topic covered, the film catalogs the personal struggles and sacrifices of not only Tibbets himself, but especially his wife and family. I don't know how close to the truth this film is, but it's easy to imagine it has a lot of truth in it. He's away MOST of the time and when they're together, it's one secret after another. This is understandable, all things considered, but it's still tears at the fabric of the marriage. In real life, Tibbets did get divorced shortly after the war.
The actual dropping of the bomb and the emotions of the moment are very well portrayed on the faces of Tibbets and his men.
This is an excellent film and I strongly recommend it.
