No Trees in the Street
The low-budget 1959 Brit noir NO TREES IN THE STREET stars Sylvia Syms, Herbert Lom, Melvyn Hayes, Ronald Howard, and Stanley Holloway.
The story centers on the hopelessness of the London slums just before WWII. Tommy (Melvyn Hayes) is a lost teenager desperate to escape and have a "better life". The one person who seems to be doing OK is Wilkie (Herbert Lom). Wilkie is a crook and Tommy's sister, Hetty (Sylvia Syms), works tirelessly trying to keep Tommy from a life of crime. Can Hetty win out, or does she too, finally succumb to the drudgery of it all?
It's an entertaining film with a healthy serving of grit which makes the dreariness of it all palpable.
Keaney gave it a 2.5 and it's 6.0 on IMDb--agreed.
