The Violent Men
The 1955 THE VIOLENT MEN is an above-average Western starring Glenn Ford, Barbara Stanwyck, Edward G. Robinson, Dianne Foster and Brian Keith.
Ford is excellent in his portrayal of understated power and calm under duress. The Robinson/Stanwyck pair are trying to drive all the ranchers and farmers out to take control of the entire valley. Ford is willing to sell because he wants to move back East since he has recovered his health, but Robinson gives him a low-ball offer, thinking he has no real options. Ford, a very successful calvary officer during the war, organizes those being driven out and uses his logistical talents to put up a fight.
The scenary ("Alabama Hills" in the Sierra Nevada's in California) is wonderful and an excellent backdrop to all the action. Over 150 films have used this location over the years, starting with Tom Mix. Evidently the name Alabama Hills came about during the Civil War by miners sympathetic to the Confederate cause.
If you like Westerns, this is a good one.
