Thunder in the Night Empty Thunder in the Night

The 1935 Crime/Drama/Mystery THUNDER IN THE NIGHT is an enjoyable little mystery.

It stars a host of our favorite character actors including the star Edmund Lowe, along with Karen Morley, Paul Cavanaugh, Una O'Connor, Gene Lockhart, John Qualen, Russell Hicks and Arthur Edmund Carewe.

This film was Carewe's penultimate. After playing Professor Bowen in Charlie Chan's Secret he suffered a stroke which hampered his career. He was found dead in his car in a Santa Monica garage, gunshot to the head and an apparent suicide.

Set in Budapest, Edmund Lowe is the police captain Torok whose best friend Coutn Alvinczy (Paul Cavanaugh) has just been elected president of the Hungarian cabinet. When Alvinczy's future is threatened by a blackmailer, Torok tries to get to the bottom of things. It isn't long before the blackmailer is murdered, with suspicion shifting from one character to another.

It does keep you guessing as to who the murderer is.

At a brisk 69 minutes, this is a good choice for some quick, light, but entertaining fare.
