Give Us This Day Empty Give Us This Day

Finally had 120 minutes to watch the 1949 Brit noir GIVE US THIS DAY (US: SALT TO THE DEVIL). Although filmed in London, it feels and looks like New York, which is where it is set.

Due to the blacklist, director Edward Dmytryk briefly operated in England in the late 1940s. Fellow blacklistee Sam Wanamaker stars as the head of an Italian immigrant family struggling to survive the Depression.

Keaney gives it a high 4.0 (out of 5.0). I enjoyed it but didn't think it was that great. My wife enjoyed the film more than I did.

The female lead, Italian actress Lea Padovani, does a fine job in this. While she had a 46-year career, most of her films were made in Italy, which is why I had never heard of her before.

Definitely worth a view, but 4.0? Hmmm.
