Ball of Fire Empty Ball of Fire

The 1941 comedy/romance BALL OF FIRE is a simply a delightful and entertaining film.  My wife and I watch this at least once a year.

It stars Gary Cooper, Barbara Stanwyck, Oscar Homolka, Dana Andrews, Dan Duryea, S.Z. Sakall, Henry Travers, Tully Marshall, Leonid Kinskey, Richard Haydn, Aubrey Mather and Allen Jenkins.

Gary Cooper is the youngest of eight totally non-hip professors assembling a dictionary of slang. They find a perfect "research associate" in the wild and zany nightclub singer Barbara Stanwyck, who hides on the professors' domicile to escape her gangster boyfriend (Dana Andrews). As Stanwyck interprets various slang expressions, she and the professors grow on each other.  She brings out their sentimental sides, while they kindle her latent decency. Cooper is the one most smitten. When gangster Andrews and his torpedo Dan Duryea show up to claim Stanwyck (Andrews wants to marry her so she can't testify against him), the professors go into action.

Highly recommended.
