The 1953 British noir DESPERATE MOMENT is a well-done film.  It stars Dirk Bogarde, Mai Zetterling, Philip Friend, Theodore Bikel and Albert Lieven.

The film is set in postwar Germany. Simon van Halder (Dirk Bogarde) serving a life term for murder, escapes to prove his innocence. After linking up with his girlfriend Anna de Burgh (Mai Zetterling), Simon relates, in flashback, the events leading up to his current dilemma. He also explains why he initially confessed to the crime. Now, after five years, Zetterling and he have to hunt down at least one eye witness to clear his name.  But the real killer catches on and starts to eliminate eye witnesses himself.

Zetterling is excellent as his quick-witted but very pleasant girl friend.

Keaney gave it a 2.5 and it's at 6.9 on IMDb--definitely worth a view.
