The Great Sinner
Very much enjoyed the 1949 drama THE GREAT SINNER with the excellent cast of Gregory Peck, Ava Gardner, Melvyn Douglas, Walter Huston, Ethel Barrymore, Frank Morgan and Agnes Moorhead.
Gregory Peck is a 19th-century Russian author. His "great sin" is gambling, which starts when he attempts to rescue aristocratic Ava Gardner from the gaming tables. He succeeds, only to lose himself to gambling fever, which costs him his friends, his reputation and his talent.
The film affords great insight how the addiction of gambling can take over and ruin one's life.
The screenplay is based loosely on Dostoyevsky's The Gambler.
Definitely recommended.
