East Side, West Side

The 1949 drama EAST SIDE, WEST SIDE is a very well done film with an impressive cast, including Barbara Stanwyck, James Mason, Van Heflin, Ava Gardner, Cyd Charisse, Nancy Davis, Gale Sondergaard, William Conrad and William Frawley (as a friendly bartender).

This is a story of infidelity among rich New York East Siders. Barbara Stanwyck stars as Jessie Bourne, a charming (and VERY understanding and forgiving) society woman who finds out that her husband Brandon (James Mason) (he can resist anything but temptation) is guiltily indulging in an illicit affair (yet again) with the lovely temptress Isobel Lorrison (Ava Gardner). Gardner is absolutely superb in her role.  Van Heflin shows up and falls in love with Stanwyck and can't understand why Stanwyck stays with Mason--or does she?  And what happens to Gardner as she is playing more than one hand at a time and not creating any friends?

Strong recommendation.  It has a 6.9 on IMDb and I would grade it at least that high.
