The Snake Pit Empty The Snake Pit

THE SNAKE PIT is a well-done 1948 noir starring Olivia de Havilland, Mark Stevens, Leo Genn and Celeste Holm.

Olivia de Havilland stars as an outwardly normal young woman, married to loyal and doting Mark Stevens. As de Havilland's behavior becomes more and more erratic, it becomes clear that she needs professional help. She is sent to an overcrowded state hospital for treatment.  While de Havilland is treated with compassion by the very caring psychiatrist Leo Genn, she is sorely abused by truly dreadful matrons and profoundly disturbed patients. She is threatened with being thrown into "the snake pit" -- an open room where the most severe cases are permitted to roam about and jabber incoherently -- if she doesn't realign her thinking, ii.e., get with their program. It's clearly touch-and-go.  Will she "escape" her "treatment"?

Keaney gives this a high 3.5 and it's at 7.7 on IMDb.
