My Brother's Keeper

The 1948 drama MY BROTHER'S KEEPER is not what you would expect from the film's title.  It stars Jack Warner, Jane Hylton, George Cole and Bill Owen.

The film catelogues the exploits/misadventures of two handcuffed-together escaped convicts. You have career criminal George Martin (Jack Warner) and terrified "first timer" Willie Stannard (George Cole). Warner sums up his philosophy as "There are two kinds of friends, useful and not useful."

The two are on the run the entire film with a brief interlude to establish the relationship between Martin and his girlfriend Nora Lawrence (Jane Hylton). Despite the fact that they're polar opposites, George and Willie develop a grudging "friendship" and dependence upon one another (but only while Willie is "useful" to George).

An enjoyable film that moves along well.  It garners a 6.5 on IMDB and I would grade it thusly or a slight bit higher.
