Ball of Fire
The 1941 BALL OF FIRE has to be one of the most charming and delightful films I've ever seen. It stars Barbara Stanwyck, Gary Cooper, and a host of some of our favorite actors (Oscar Homolka, Dana Andrews, Dan Duryea, S.Z. Sakall, Henry Travers, Tully Marshall, Leonid Kinsky, Richard Haydn, Aubrey Mather, Allen Jenkins, amongst others).
Gary Cooper is the youngest of eight out-of-touch professors working on a dictionary of slang. Discovering they don't know all they need to know from a brief discussion with Jenkins, they find perfect "research associate" in good-time girl Barbara Stanwyck, who hides on the professors' domicile to escape her gangster boyfriend (Dana Andrews). As Stanwyck interprets various slang expression, she and the professors grow quite fond of one another; she brings out their sentimental sides, while they revive her essential decency. However, when the smitten Cooper gets closer to Stanwyck and her gangster boyfriend finds out...
This film is HIGHLY recommended.
