Hollywood Story Empty Hollywood Story

Post by Bruce R Tue Oct 10, 2017 1:51 pm

HOLLYWOOD STORY is a solid 1951 noir starring Richard Conte, Julie Adams, Richard Egan, Henry Hull, Fred Clark and Jim Backus.  There are also cameo appearances of old-time movie stars Francis X. Bushman, Betty Blythe, William Farnum, Helen Gibson, and Elmo Lincoln (the first Tarzan).

The story concerns a long-unsolved homicide case involving several silent-film stars (essentially an homage to the unsolved 1922 William Desmond Taylor scandal). Arriving in Hollywood, producer Conte decides to make a movie based on the case.  He rounds up its surviving (unwilling) participants, including a once-great star/director (Henry Hull) reduced to bit parts and living in a shack.  And so the whodunit commences.

I really enjoyed this one.  Keaney gave it a 2.0, but I'd grade it a bit higher.

There's an excellent copy on TCM.
