Really enjoyed the 1947 Brit noir UNCLE SILAS (US: THE INHERITANCE) starring a young Jean Simmons, Katina Paxinou (birth name: Ekaterini Konstantopoulou--wonder why she changed it?!), Derrick de Marney and Derek Bond.

It's about a young woman, Caroline (Simmons), who goes to live with her scheming old Uncle Silas in his big, gloomy mansion after her father dies. Uncle Silas (Derrick De Marney) and his accomplices; a French governess, Madame de la Rougierre (played fabulously by Paxinou--who is widely considered the best Greek actress of the 20th century), and his son, Dudley (played creepily by Manning Whiley) are planning to do away with the heroine to gain her fortune. Nice cinematography and sets add to this atmospheric film.

Initially I was surprised that Keaney gave it a 3.0, but having watched it, I agree.

Recommended.
