Whistling in Dixie
Viewed the 1942 WHISTLING IN DIXIE for a third time in 13 years. It's a film our youngest enjoys so we thought we'd take the opportunity to watch a film with her--a rare occurrence these days.
This is the middle entry in the 3-film "Whistling" series. The first was Whistling in the Dark (1941) and the last Whistling in Brooklyn (1943). The series stars Red Skelton as Wally Benton, aka "The Fox" with Ann Rutherford as his patient and loyal fiancee. The Fox solves mysteries on the radio but comes apart at the word "murder".
After receiving a sorority pin in the mail, Carol (Ann Rutherford) heads southward to help out her old college friend Ellamae Downs (Diana Lewis), who's enmeshed in a local mystery. Wally tags along, only to find himself up to his neck in intrigue and murder. The climax finds our Wally and heroine trapped in the basement of an old Civil War fort, which is rapidly filling with water and so it goes.
It's an enjoyable, light comedy that is not overly silly.

Nice poster card, Chris.
However, Alan might have something to say about you being the Fox!

I'll also put this down as a favorite -- though I think I like Whistling in the Dark a bit more (the material seems a little fresher there). I'm not a big Red Skelton fan -- like Danny Kaye, he hams it up too much for me most of the time -- but it definitely works in his favor here.

Agree on both counts re: Whistling in the Dark and generally too much hamming it up.
Finding classic films one of kids are willing to watch isn't easy. A bit of bending on my part helps.
