The Man Who Lived Twice (1936)

Post by garyleeoz on Sun Aug 07, 2016 3:33 am

Very similar story to THE CRIME DOCTOR where burglar/cop killer (Ralph Bellamy) agrees to a brain operation to remove his psychopathic compulsions but instead he ends up an amnesiac (with plastic surgery thrown in so that he can start a new life). The movie begins with a montage featuring his most recent burglary and get away but slows to a crawl soon after the brain operation and then becomes interesting again when people from his past begin to suspect who he is (or was). The movie was remade in the 1950s in 3D with Edmund O'Brien as MAN IN THE DARK but the remake didn't remind me at all of CRIME DOCTOR ... I guess it's because Edmund O'Brien never becomes a doctor because he's kidnapped by his old crime buddies while still at the hospital.

I liked both movies so long as I don't think too long about certain plot contrivances. Rolling Eyes

Haven't got a copy of THE MAN WHO LIVED TWICE.

But I do have an un-viewed copy THE MAN IN THE DARK, which I'll have to hunt down very soon.

Thanks for the heads up, Gary.

That's OK. I've had 3 attempts at receiving THE MAN WHO LIVED TWICE from 3 different collectors. Oh well, the third time's the charm. (I recently watched THE MAN IN THE DARK and that inspired me to try one more time).

I think it's from TCM (USA) so it's OK ... about a 6 or 7 out of 10. Perhaps a little grainy or dark ? Not as good as a restored print but better than a recording made from a worn/faded film print.

I definitely recommend the 1936 THE MAN WHO LIVED TWICE. In fact, I think it's better than the original entry in the CRIME DOCTOR series.

MAN IN THE DARK is OK, but i prefer both of the above to it.

Thanks to Gary for alerting me to these two films.
